Reverse Parallel Parking - Steps to Success
To accomplish a good reverse parallel park think of the vehicle as a clock.  When you are driving down the road your vehicle is at 12 o’clock

  1. Vehicle Approach
    1. Indicate left
    2. Large vehicle – mirror to mirror
    3. Small vehicle – mirror to front wheel
  2. Select reverse gear
    1. Identify a point on the opposite side of the road that is at one o'clock
    2. Mirror & head check both ways (including looking out the rear window)
    3. Turn steering wheel to left
    4. Reverse vehicle to between 1 and 2 o’clock (the vehicle should be facing the one o'clock position)
    5. Stop
  3. Straighten steering wheel
    1. Reverse till you feel left rear wheel drop into gutter or you think you are close enough (use left side mirror to judge distance). Alternatively, when you can see the corner of the vehicle ahead pass the corner of the A pillar.
    2. Stop
  4. Turn steering wheel to right (hard lock)
    1. Reverse till vehicle is at 12 o’clock or front wheels drop in gutter
    2. Stop
  5. Select drive (forward)
    1. Straighten steering wheel
    2. Drive forward till vehicle is within 2m of vehicle in front
    3. Stop
    4. Secure vehicle
